Natural Light Photography
As photographers, we travel a lot. We are usually on assignment in buildings in Brisbane and around the country and sadly less often outside. On those rare occasions we are given the chance to shoot outdoors, we have to take a view on the client’s brief. Flash, natural light or both combined… these are the choices. Different briefs may dictate a certain look and that contains the answers you need in order to light the scene or not.
Sometimes, the look can be left open and the locations speak for themselves. They tell you what they want and how to shoot them. It can be said that the image in this post has been dictated by the location. A gentle light on the background and soft, directional light on the client’s face.
Your portraits can be shot anywhere , tell me your idea and I can work out a creative brief.

I've spend most of my life living and working as a commercial photographer in Brisbane thinking I know all the angles to photograph the city hall. However on a walk down George St just before Christmas I discovered this angle and think how beautiful it looked. Recently we completed the photography for port of brisbane working with Rowland on the visual communication. This is one of the images which portray the coming and going of the port.
Over the years there has been many changes in photographic technology. Today digital is the norm and it has made 'picture taking' cheaper and more easier for all. People say all the time, 'fix it in photoshop' but as a professional photographer I believe in getting it right in the camera as much as possible.
This photo was taken of a client building. We researched the best time and location. We got the best photograph on the day but we could not have all the lights on in the building as they were in other tenancies. The solution was definitely photoshop where I replaced the dark levels with parts of the other lit levels and finally I added the moon for a bit of drama. This is were the discipline of getting it right in the camera and then using photoshop to create a better and more dynamic photo for the client works in the modern era. Peter Budd
I love street photography capturing spontaneous everyday moments. The great photographers street photographers like Cartier-Bresson and today the Magnum photographers, I love the freedom of roaming the streets of the world taking people and objects. It helps keep my eye in and experiment with angles and light. I’ve been photographing people for years and It’s a way of looking at the surroundings I'm in and seeing what I'd general miss if I was just walking around.

In a world of visual bombardment is there a place for black and white photography? Photography started its life in black and white and it is fair to say that as humans it does not exist in the world around us. The human eye sees colour every day yet we accept black and white photographs as normal. I believe that black and white gives us a purer form of creativity by removing the colour and leaving the form with its tonal values to express the beauty in everyday subjects. PB
I shot earlier in the year and thought how clever they were being close to the PA Hospital.
